The Advice I Got From Amy Porterfield

Last week was a big week for me. No, scratch that - it was enormous.

I had the incredible opportunity to talk to one of my business heroes: the one & only Amy Porterfield. I'm still pinching myself!

For those who don't know her (where have you been?), she's the queen of online marketing, a NYTimes best-selling authro, the host of Online Marketing Made Easy podcast, and the creator of a handful of fantastic courses (most of which I've taken).

Needless to say, she's a bit of a big deal in the entrepreneurial world.

And the best part?

I got to ask her for some advice, and her response to me was pure gold.

Keep reading for that...

So, how did I end up face-to-face with Amy? (Zoom counts as face-to-face, yes?)

Let me explain…

Last week, I finally joined the mastermind group hosted by my writing & business mentor Alex Cattoni. It’s a high-level membership for top copywriters. It’s kind of like being an Avenger. (Kind of.)

Alex brings in guest speakers each month. And guess who was our first guest speaker during Week 1? You got it. Amy F-ing Porterfield! Talk about an epic start to the mastermind.

I was already excited about the group before, but meeting one of my heroes on the first day took my excitement to bananas level. It was like hitting the jackpot on the first spin of a slot machine - except in this case my jackpot was a wealth of knowledge from two of the smartest women in the biz. Suffice to say that I was thrilled to be there.

During Amy's talk, I mustered up the courage to ask a question that had been bugging me for months: how the heck do I get back into social media after being off-grid for 6 years?

Before I tell you what she said….

Let me tell you this: being off social media for 6 years was a thing of glory. It was a conscious decision I made, and it served me well. I felt like I was in a zen bubble of protection and insulation from the bat-shit-crazy internet.

No constant notifications, no comparison game, no opinions of strangers. It was like a dream.

But then, I decided to start a business, and all of a sudden, my bubble of zen started to feel more like a bubble of limitation. I was feeling stuck playing small, and my lack of presence on social media was starting to feel like a serious hindrance.

I mean, how do you grow a business these days without social media, right?

I knew I had to face my fears and jump back in, but damn if it wasn't scary! Despite writing paid ads for socials on the reg, I had forgotten everything there was to know about posting etiquette, editing, DMs, and all that jazz. It was like jumping into a pool after years of practicing my doggy paddle in the bathtub.

So I’m face-to-face with Amy, chin in my hands, waiting for her response.

Here’s what she told me…

“I want you to start with ONE platform and give it your all. Find something you enjoy and go all in. If it doesn't feel good, get rid of it, and try something different. Only do what feels good & authentic to you.”

Then she dropped this line:

“Sometimes you’ve got to let go of what’s comfortable to step into what’s possible.”

🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 You guys, it was exactly what I needed to hear at that moment.

(I have a feeling you might need to hear that today, too, which is why I wanted to share this story.)

So you know what?

With Amy's advice in mind, I took a deep breath and finally took my first step back in the social media world.

👉 I made an Instagram account.

It might sound like a small step, but I have to confess: starting from square one after a glorious 6-year hiatus is pretty intimidating. 😳

But we're going all in, baby.

Here’s to letting go of what’s comfortable to step into what’s possible. 🥂

Hope to see you over there!
